Password Selection Guidelines

Selecting an appropriate and secure password is an important step in the password change process.

Houghton College requires the following password complexity requirements for all accounts:

  • Minimum length of 8 characters
  • Password must not contain any parts of your name or your username (3 consecutive characters)
  • Password cannot be re-used
  • Password must contain three of the following four character types:
    • English uppercase characters (A through Z)
    • English lowercase characters (a through z)
    • Numerals (0 through 9)
    • Non-alphabetic characters (such as !, $, #)

It can be challenging to choose a password that will be memorable enough that you will not be tempted to write it down (which would compromise the information that that password protects).  Some common techniques for choosing a memorable password include using:

  • A phrase. For instance, take the phrase "Jack and Jill ran down the hill" and turn it into the password "JackJillDownHill1".
  • A collection of similar words. For instance, selecting several famous US Presidents and putting their names together: "WashingtonLincolnJFK3"
  • The first letter of each word in a verse, phrase, or song title, with mixed case and punctuation or numbers (For example, "In God We Trust" could become "iGwt". Add symbols and/or numbers and it becomes "iGwt1776")
  • Creatively using a reference to a favorite (but not obvious) Bible verse or concept.  Some examples are given below with rather obvious references.  Please use references that are harder to guess.

John3:16

1Cor10:13

23/Psalm

Word/Do

  • The initials of two or more friends (unrelated), with punctuation inserted
  • Alternating one consonant and one or two vowels, to create a nonsense word which you can pronounce, and then mixing in some numbers or symbols

Whatever password you choose, please remember that it is a violation of the Acceptable Use Policy to intentionally or unintentionally reveal your password or share the use of your network account.

If you need to remember multiple passwords, it may be helpful to consider using a password safe. This is a piece of software you install on your computer that acts as a secure database for holding all your passwords. You enter a master password to gain access to the safe and then all your other passwords reside within the safe and can be easily looked up or copy and pasted. This way you only have to remember the master password and possibly one or two more to log into the computer. If this option sounds appealing to you, you may wish to consider the following pieces of software: Password Safe and KeePass
