Filtering unwanted mail in Google Mail

Google Mail offers a robust filter tool to keep unwanted e-mails from cluttering your inbox (this is the same concept as Rules in Microsoft Outlook). To use it, you'll need to create a filter.

1. Log in to your Google e-mail account.

2. In the upper right, click on the gray box with an image of a cog:

 

3. Select the "Settings" option from the box that appears. Your screen will look like this:

4. The "General" window will be the selected option. Clcik on the word "Filters" to the right of the red "Compose" box: 

5. From the screen that appears, there should be two options in the bottom middle of your view. Click on "Create a new filter".

6. In the window that pops up, enter the undesired e-mail address in the 1st line (the "From" field). The two needed to block student e-mails are "sgaannouncements@hougton.edu" and "hccampuslife@houghton.edu". 

7. Enter both addresses, separated by a comma, as you would in an e-mail. 

8. Click "Create filter with this search" in the bottom left right.

9. You'll be given a box like the one below:

10. Select the first and the last checkboxes, "Skip the Inbox" and "Also apply filter to __ matching conversations". Your box should match the one below:

11. Click the blue "Create Filter" button.

12. All messages that were undesired should disappear. All future e-mails will still be received, but won't appear in your Inbox to clutter it.

13. Select "All Mail" from the left sidebar to browse the archived mail.
