Intel Macs: Resetting Power Management SMC (System Management Controller)


Before Resetting the Power Management

  1. Shut down the computer.
  2. If your Mac isn't responding, force the shutdown by pressing and holding the power button for 10 seconds.
  3. Note: You will lose all of your unsaved files.

Resetting the Resetting Power Management SMC You Can Remove

  1. Shut down the computer.
  2. Disconnect power supply from the computer.
  3. Remove the battery.
  4. Press and hold the power button for 5-7 seconds.
  5. Release the power button.
  6. Install the battery and connect the power supply.
  7. Power on the computer normally.

Resetting the SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own

  1. Shut down the computer.
  2. Plug in the power supply to the computer and electrical outlet.
  3. Press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the Power Button at the same time.
  4. Release all at the same time.
  5. Power on the computer normally. 
    • The power supply LED may change between yellow and green.

Resetting the SMC for Mac Pro, Intel-based iMac, Intel-based Mac mini, or Intel-based Xserve

  1. Shut down the computer.
  2. Unplug the power cord.
  3. Wait 15 seconds.
  4. Plugin the power cord.
  5. Wait 5-7 seconds and power on the computer normally.
