Installing the Houghton College root certificate

Before you begin, you will need to install the Houghton College root certificate on your computer so that your computer will trust our network. Click on the following link to download it: and once downloaded, open it up and click on "Install Certificate...". When prompted, select "Place all certificates in the following store" and pick "Trusted Root Certification Authorities" from the list of options (it should be the 2nd option from the top). Then press "Finish" and exit the window.

Setting up HC-Secure Wi-Fi network

Next you will need to create the HC-Secure Wi-Fi network, or edit it if it already exists on your computer. On Windows 7 or 8, go to Control Panel, and then open up the "Network and Sharing Center". On the left-hand side, select "Manage wireless networks" from the list of options. Then either "Add" a new network, or right-click on HC-Secure if it is listed and select "Properties".

Confirm that "Connect automatically when this network is in range" is checked.

Then go to the Security tab, and configure the following options:

For security type select "WPA2-Enterprise" with "AES" encryption.

Under "Choose a network authentication method" select "Microsoft: Protected EAP (PEAP)" and check the box to "Remember my credentials for this connection each time I'm logged in".

Then click on "Settings" next to PEAP. Here you need to check the boxes for "Validate server certificate" and "Connect to these servers:" and type in the following text in the box: ";".

Next, locate "HoughtonCA1" in the list of Trusted Root Certification Authorities and select it (if you cannot find it, please follow the directions at the top of the article titled "Installing the Houghton College root certificate").

Finally, ensure that "Select Authentication Method" is set to "Secured password (EAP-MSCHAP v2)" and the checkbox for "Enable Fast Reconnect" is checked.

Now click "OK" and you will be back at the HC-Secure Security tab. From here, select "Advanced settings".

Check the box next to "Specify authentication mode" and select "User authentication" from the list. It may prompt you for credentials, if so, please enter your Houghton College username and password. If it does not prompt you, press the "Save credentials" button and then it will prompt for credentials.

Once you are done with that, click "OK" on any remaining configuration windows. You should now be able to connect to HC-Secure.
