Accessing PDF files on vStationAS
Posted by Seth Taylor on 09 March 2016 09:45 AM

On vStationAS, you may encounter an error when trying to open a PDF file attached to an e-mail in Outlook.  The error is "There was an error opening this document. Access Denied."  This error is a result of a bug in the Adobe Reader DC product that Adobe has not yet fixed.

There are two ways to solve this problem.

Solution 1

If you need to open the file in Adobe Reader, simply right-click on the attachment, save it to the computer, perhaps to the desktop, and then double-click on the saved copy to open it.

Solution 2

You can change your default file viewer to be Google Chrome if you do not need the extra features of Adobe Reader DC.  To change the default file association, simply:

  1. Open Set Associations by clicking the Start button, typing "associated" and then clicking on "Change the file type associated with a file extension."

  2. In the Set Associations window, scroll down to ".pdf" (or type ".pdf" to scroll to that line).

  3. Click the "Change program..." button.

  4. Click "Google Chrome".

  5. Close the Set Associations window.  From this point forward, when you open a PDF in Outlook it should open it in Google Chrome and thus avoid the error message.
